Keeping Your Emergency Contacts Updated

Medical personnel being able to access your medical history in the case of an emergency could be the difference between life and death. If you happen to be incapacitated, you may not be able to provide that information yourself.

There are many different systems out there to help you keep your contacts and medical history information available to first responders. Make sure to take the time to update your details with these free tools:

  • Smartphone – You can input emergency contacts that are accessible to others even when your phone is locked.
  • Medical ID for phones –  iPhone users can use a preinstalled health app to input their medical needs for first responders. All you need to do is open the Health app, review your medical ID, and enter your information.

You can include contacts, birthdates, and any other medical details that you feel are important for first responders to know. You can make your medical ID available on your phone lock screen for first responders.

There is also an option to share your medical information automatically with a dispatcher in case you ever need to make an emergency call.

  • Emergency info on android devices – Depending on your android device, you may be able to set your “emergency information” in your settings. Add anyone that you want as an emergency contact.

In settings, you can set your lock screen as your emergency contact information.

  • In case of emergency (ICE) – This program encourages people to list their contacts under “in case of emergency” or “ICE”.   This lets paramedics know who to contact in the event of an emergency. There are free ICE apps that allow one to send instant messages along with a location to the contacts of your choosing with just the tap of a button.
  • National Next of Kin Registry (NOKR)– This registry is a free service that allows you to register yourself and your next of kin contacts for the events like daily emergencies or natural disasters. This information is not available to the public, only to emergency service agencies registered with the NOKR. In an accident, these services would notify your next of kin about your current status. You can register online or through the mail.

Make sure the people you list as an emergency contact have agreed to act in this capacity. It is also best if they know about any health conditions in the case that they are in contact with emergency services.

The best way to protect yourself is to contact your local elder law attorney. They will ensure you have the best plan to protect yourself and your family.
